Robert Anthony Hartman, 59, was stopped on Saturday, Dec. 28, after Wilton Police clocked him allegedly driving 55 mph in a 30 mph zone near the intersection of Wolfpit Road with Belden Hill Road, Wilton Police said.

During the traffic stop, officers directed Hartman to pull into a business driveway on Wolfpit Road, but instead of pulling in Hartman allegedly stopped in front of the business, police said.

Officers again instructed Hartman to pull into the driveway, but instead, he allegedly turned left into the traffic lane of Wolfpit Road, grinded the vehicle's gears, and then finally reversed into the business driveway, police said.

When asked why he couldn't follow simple instructions to turn right into the business driveway he responded, "Quite honestly it's an old car."

During an investigation, officers said they allegedly detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from Hartman's breath, his speech was slurred, and his eyes appeared glassy and bloodshot, police added.

Officers then conducted a field sobriety test which Hartman was unable to perform and ultimately refused to test, police said.

During a search, officers found a receipt from Ancona's Wine and Liquors was discovered in his pocket for a Cellars Lot 42 Pinot Grigio purchased on a short time earlier. They also located in the vehicle the same bottle of wine which was two-thirds full and a paper cup containing wine, police said.

Hartman was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs, driving too fast, and operating a vehicle without insurance.

He was released on a $260 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 10, 2020.
